It's pretty literal. The female figure is opening up her head and releasing reason. I've always loved the story of Athena, who sprung from her father Zeus's head fully formed. What a great image that brings to mind. I think that's where this idea originated. In this sculpture the figure that is emerging from her head has his eyes wide open, hers though, are closing. But why is she "Abandoning Reason"? Well I hope you the viewer, have an idea or two.
