"Beacon of Hope"
"Beacon of Hope"
Stoneware/Oak base
15"X20"X15"
August 2007

The female figure shows strength and is looking towards the future, She holds a candle to help guide you to stay on the long hard path. My inspiration was the Statue of Liberty, and is reason for the green band around the base. Ironically enough , the story of how this piece was made goes hand in hand with the title and idea. During the first firing, her head was blown clear off of her neck. Now this, as you can probably guess can be a great disappointment, especially when it is the first firing of this series of thirty figures. Perhaps a bad omen? I didn't let this discourage me. I was able to fix, re-fire, and glaze her. She bears her scars, but it only adds to her beauty and strength.
